Before you go checking for dangling cords and testing fire extinguishers (also important!), let us clarify: we’re talking about psychological safety.
Give yourself one point for each statement that rings true:
▢ I have clearly defined workplace boundaries that protect my time, preserve my energy, and honor my values. ▢ My colleagues and manager respect those boundaries. ▢ My workplace’s culture rewards vulnerability; I’m encouraged to ask questions, challenge the status quo, admit to mistakes, and explore ideas without fearing judgment. ▢ Participation is democratic; I feel
included in work processes. ▢ Failure is considered inevitable and temporary. I learn from it and move on.
Your Score 5 = You feel psychologically safe at work, which allows you to take chances and ownership, pursue ideas, challenge the status quo, and embrace innovation! 4 = 5 points is the only acceptable score. 3 = See above. 2 = Same. 1 = ↑↑ 0 = Don’t panic. There’s a way to turn this around.
Just like the fire marshall on your floor isn’t responsible for fixing the busted sprinkler system or putting out the fires, you don’t have to single-handedly solve a culture problem.
But you can absolutely raise concerns with your leadership team in a constructive, non-judgmental way that mirrors the changes you wish to see — and deserve.
